Rooster Care
How can I remove sharp spurs?
Sharp spurs can be trimmed back carefully to help reduce injury risk to people, other birds, or the rooster himself.
Removing or trimming sharp spurs
The safest way to shorten a sharp spur is to securely hold the bird’s leg and carefully saw or trim the spur back.
Be sure to leave about 1/2 inch of spur away from the leg. Do not cut the spur too close to the leg.
Basic steps
Hold the bird calmly and securely so he cannot kick or twist away.
Hold the bird’s leg firmly so the spur stays steady while trimming.
Carefully saw or trim off the sharp end of the spur.
Leave about 1/2 inch of spur away from the leg to avoid cutting too close.
Do not cut too close
Spurs can bleed if cut too short. If you are unsure or uncomfortable trimming spurs yourself, contact a veterinarian or an experienced poultry keeper for assistance.
Reduce Injury Risk
Trimming sharp spurs can help prevent scratches or injuries to people and other birds.
Monitor Your Rooster
After trimming, watch the rooster to make sure he is walking normally and that there is no bleeding.
Go slowly, keep the bird secure, and leave enough spur so you do not cut too close to the leg.
