Egg Color & Hen Health
Why are my eggs changing color?
Egg color may naturally lighten during a hen’s laying cycle, but nutrition can also play a role.
Egg color can change during the laying cycle
Sometimes eggs will lighten in color during a laying cycle. This can be a normal change and does not always mean something is wrong.
However, lighter egg color may also be related to nutrition, including a possible lack of vitamin K.
Laying Cycle
Eggshell color can naturally lighten as a hen continues through her laying cycle.
Nutrition
A lack of vitamin K may also contribute to changes in egg color.
What can I do?
Try adding vitamin K to your hens’ diet. If the color change is related to a lack of vitamin K, you should begin to see a change in about 7 days.
It is also a good idea to make sure your hens have access to a quality feed, clean water, and a balanced diet.
Watch for other changes
If your hens are also showing signs of illness, reduced appetite, unusual behavior, or a major drop in egg production, contact a poultry specialist or veterinarian for guidance.
Egg color changes are often normal, but nutrition can make a difference in overall egg quality and hen health.
