Egg Color & Hen Health
Why are my eggs changing color?
Egg color can naturally lighten during a hen’s laying cycle, but diet and nutrition may also play a role.
Egg color may lighten during the laying cycle
Sometimes eggs will naturally lighten in color during a hen’s laying cycle. This can happen as a hen continues laying over time and is not always a sign that something is wrong.
However, a change in egg color may also be related to nutrition, including a possible lack of vitamin K.
Natural Laying Cycle
Eggshell color can fade or lighten as a hen moves through her laying cycle.
Diet & Nutrition
Egg color changes may also be related to nutrition, including a possible lack of vitamin K.
What can I do?
You can try adding vitamin K to your hens’ diet. If the color change is related to a vitamin K deficiency, you may begin to see a change in about 7 days.
It is also a good idea to make sure your hens have access to a quality layer feed, clean water, and a balanced diet.
Watch for other symptoms
If your hens are showing signs of illness, reduced appetite, unusual behavior, or a major drop in egg production, you may want to contact a poultry specialist or veterinarian for guidance.
Egg color changes are often normal, but nutrition can make a difference in overall egg quality and hen health.
