Brooder & Coop Setup
Do I need a roost pole for my chicks?
Yes, chickens naturally prefer to roost and will start looking for a place to roost at a young age.
Chicks like having a place to roost
Chickens are more comfortable while sleeping if they can roost. Even young chicks may start looking for something to perch on.
We recommend starting with a low roost that is about 12 inches off the ground, then gradually raising it as they get older.
Start Low
Start with a roost about 12 inches off the ground for young birds.
Raise Gradually
As the birds grow, the roost can gradually be moved higher.
Adult Roost Height
Around 8 months old, a normal roost is often 4–7 feet high.
What size and material should the roost be?
A normal roost is about 1–2 inches in diameter.
Wood is commonly used and works well for roost poles.
PVC is also commonly used for roost poles.
Metal is not recommended because it can get too cold in the winter.
